Head of the Department of Italian Studies and the Italian Philology Programme: Prof. Dr. Artur Gałkowski
Description of tasks
The Department of Italian Studies at the University of Łódź was established in 2010. It emerged from the Italian specialization within the field of Italian language, literature and culture studies at the Department of Romance Philology (currently the Institute of Romance Studies), where the specialization has been offered continuously since 1971. The Department offers first- (Bachelor’s degree) and second-cycle (Master's degree = MA) studies in Italian Philology, with the second-cycle programme including translation and teacher-training specializations. The establishment of the Italian Philology programme was associated with the implementation of the ESF Human Capital Operational Programme (PO KL) project entitled “Training staff for the needs of the flexicurity labour market and knowledge-based economy – the University of Łódź’s humanities and social sciences degree programmes” (2010–2015).
Main research areas
The Department conducts research in the fields of linguistics, literary studies, and cultural and religious studies.
In linguistics, members of the Department work in the broad field of Italian and Romance linguistics. Their specializations include the study of proper names (onomastics and chrematonomastics), specialized terminology, written, oral and specialized translation, discourse analysis (including media and press discourse), and language pedagogy, particularly the teaching of Italian as a foreign language at all levels of education.
In literary studies, research focuses on Italian literature of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as ancient Italian literature.
