About us

The Institute of Art History (IHS) is an academic and research unit within the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of Lodz. Its mission is to conduct advanced research and provide education in the field of art history, art theory, and visual culture, as well as in heritage protection, museology, and contemporary exhibition practices.

The Institute comprises several chairs and research teams focusing on different areas of art history — from the Middle Ages to contemporary art — as well as on aesthetics, image theory, non-European art, and new media. Its academic staff conduct both fundamental and applied research, addressing topics such as European, African, and Asian art, museum studies, accessibility of art for people with disabilities, and decolonial and global perspectives in art history.

The Institute collaborates closely with museums, galleries, cultural institutions, and academic centres in Poland and abroad. Its researchers lead and participate in numerous national and international projects funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA), and the European Commission (Horizon Europe), among others.

The Institute of Art History at the University of Lodz is also the publisher of the peer-reviewed journal Art Inquiry. Recherches sur les arts, which presents interdisciplinary research on art in its historical, theoretical, and contemporary dimensions.

The Institute’s headquarters are located in the city centre of Łódź, at 65 Narutowicza Street, in close proximity to other units of the Faculty of Philosophy and History and to major cultural institutions with which it maintains long-term partnerships.
