Uroczyste promocje doktorskie i habilitacyjne - święto nauki na UŁ

One hundred and twenty five. That is how many scientific successes were celebrated at the University of Lodz during ceremonial doctoral and habilitation promotions. The next step in the career of our scientists is also an increase of the scientific potential of the entire University. One hundred and twenty five scientists representing 3 fields of science (humanities, social sciences and natural sciences), 18 disciplines and from 12 Faculties took part in this year’s doctoral and habilitation promotions. Research of each of them shows the strength of the University of Lodz, built by diversity and curiosity about the world around us. We can freely call our scientists’ effort and commitment a „good job”.

Ceremonial awarding doctoral and habilitation promotions is a day of celebration of science at the University of Lodz. It is a moment of honouring the hardships and efforts of members of our community, their commitment and many years of work as well as persistence in pursuing the set goals. The development of our community makes me happy as the Rector and as a scientist. Congratulations to all the new doctoral and doctor habilitatus degrees holders. Your success is a source of pride for the entire University. I would like to thank all of You who develop their careers at our University. Your effort builds the scientific potential of the University of Lodz and allows us to strive for research excellence

Summarizes prof. Elżbieta Żądzińska, the UL Rektor.

Doctoral and habilitation promotions are a symbolic moment in scientific career, a specific rite of passage in the career of every scientist. This year’s promotions were held between 25 and 31 May in the Alfred Biedermann’s Palace and Gardens. Restrictions related to the pandemic did not allow for celebration of this event in a traditional way, among the entire academic community and the families of our promoted scientists. Although unique in its form, this year’s event was, as always, and perhaps especially, a celebration of science at the University of Lodz.

Congratulations to all the new doctoral  and doctor habilitatus degrees holders and thank You for your contribution to building the University of Lodz, for your good job! Feel free to look at the photo report from this year’s event

Passion for science

What we often forget about in conversations about science, and what is its basis, is a true passion, creative and independent attitude and imagination. These qualities make it possible to distinguish scientists for whom the conducted research is not only a mechanical activity, required by a reporting obligation. These are researchers who shape our University, simultaneously building the UL community and making our University a great place for development and debate.

This is how science enthusiasts, the heroes of this year's doctoral and habilitation promotions, speak about their research work:

In scientific and research work not only an efficient intellect and imagination are needed, not only diligence, discipline and patience; authentic love and passion are also necessary.

dr hab. Andrzej Dąbrowski (Humanities, discipline: philosophy)

As a humanist I feel convinced that you cannot separate scientific and didactic work from life and personal development. Our research is intertwined with teaching, and the context of our work is our private development. By accepting these relationships and permeations, I allow these areas of my life to support and inspire each other. Thanks to this, my scientific work, set in the world that surrounds me and concerning matters that are important to me, is not only work. It is my passion and a key element of my life.

dr hab. Magdalena Cieślak (Humanities, discipline: literary studies)

Scientific development, like development in every area of life, requires commitment, passion and persistence. Each beginning starts with a vision, and youth is the time when we know how to look at the world differently and undermine the status quo (...).

dr Justyna Sadowska (Social sciences, discipline: law)

I believe that it is worth being inquisitive in your research, striving for your goal and, most of all, not giving up. In my scientific work, I develop my natural passions, I look for new research methods, try to go beyond the usual patterns, and I also open up to cooperation with scientists from around the world, without limiting myself to a given geographical area.

Thanks to doctoral studies at the University of Lodz, in particular under the supervision of professor Michał Grabowski, I became involved in research work, and the discussions we had and the advice I received allowed me to choose the best path for my career. I had the opportunity to meet and cooperate with the most experienced scientists from around the world, which was a valuable lesson and a great experience for me. Field trips, domestic and foreign internships and work in other regions of the world have also shaped my character. Thanks to this, in everyday life I am also an open and inquisitive person, I am not afraid to take up new challenges. I believe that if we feel that our work is valuable and gives us joy, then we should continue it, even if we will have to wait a while for the results.
