Najczęściej cytowani naukowcy na świecie. Badacze z Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego w TOP 2% prestiżowego rankingu

There are 23 researchers from the University of Lodz among the most highly cited scientists in the world. This gives us a better result than the one last year (18 scientists). The ranking lists including 2% of the most influential authors have been elaborated by the analysts from Stanford University, Elsevier Publishing Group and SciTech Strategies.

Every year Elsevier publishes a list of the world's top scientists in terms of the citation impact of publications which they are authors or co-authors of. The authors of the database, taking into account the most important indicators characteristic for measuring the citation rate, developed an algorithm on the basis of which two tables were created. The first one covers the importance of a scientist's publications throughout their professional career, while the second one concerns only works published in 2020.

There are 16 scientists from the University of Lodz on the first list and 18 on the latter one. In total, the lists include 23 researchers, whose surnames are not repeated.

The prestigious list of 2% of scientists with the highest citation rate measured over their entire career to date includes the following scientists from the University of Lodz (in alphabetical order):

Scientists with the highest citation count of publications that appeared in 2020 include the following researchers from the University of Lodz (in alphabetical order):

For comparison, it is worth recalling last year's data. The list of the importance of a scientist's publication for their entire career included 9 people from the University of Lodz, while the list concerning the works published in 2020 - 14 people. In total, both lists included 18 scientists whose names did not repeat themselves.

The increase that has been recorded this year is not only due to native researchers – it has been also influenced by several dozen scientists from abroad joining the group of employees of the University of Lodz in the last year. The vast majority of them will spend several years at our university, working together with researchers from the University of Lodz. This is the largest scientific "transfer" in the history of the University of Lodz, which is already giving results.

What does the Scopus database include, based on which the analysis was performed?

The Elsevier ranking takes into account those researchers whose scientific achievements obtained the highest citation rate, measured using the algorithm developed by the authors of the database. The bibliometric index was based on such criteria as: Hirsch Index, Impact Factor, number of citations (self-citations included), place in the list of authors. It is worth noting that the list has been prepared on the basis of the data from the Scopus database, and the algorithm also promotes those publications in which the author was the only, first or the last author mentioned.

Scopus database is one of the available sources of scientific data. It contains such information as:

  • full bibliographic data,
  • contents of abstracts (summaries),
  • keywords,
  • works cited (literature references),
  • citation information for the document.

Various types of documents (beginning with articles in scientific journals, through books and their chapters, to conference materials and patents) are indexed in the Scopus database. They are broken down into four overarching scientific fields: Life Sciences, Science and Engineering, Health Sciences and Social Sciences, and Humanities. The indexed content is published in over 40 local languages and comes from over 5,000 international publishers.
