Fotografia w działaniu: kontestacja, aktywizacja i interwencja – dyskusja

Place of the event: Tymienieckiego 3, 90-365 Łódź
When: 17 June 2023 (Saturday) 17:00 - 19:00

On Saturday (17 June) at 5:00 p.m. in the Fotofestiwal Centre (Tymienieckiego 3 in Lodz) a panel discussion "Photography in Action: Contestation, Activation and Intervention" will begin. Artists, curators, activists and researchers - Julia Szabłowska, Io Siversten and Sergio Valenzuela Escobedo – will talk about how photography can change the environment and the condition of a modern man. The discussion will be led by Tomasz Ferenc (University of Lodz).

NOTE: The discussion will be in English!

  • Can we make a real change to our environment and improve the quality of human (and non-human) life thanks to photography?
  • Do photographic interventions work? If so, what is it that determines whether they are effective or not?
  • In what social spaces do such endeavours succeed best?

Questions about different manners of activation and intervention through the use of photography will be the main theme of this panel discussion.

Among the participants, there will be artists, art curators, activists and researchers who take part in Fotofestiwal. Each one of them uses photography in order to offer help, intervene, spread information and activate people. During the panel discussion, we will talk about different ways of using visual media for that and also about the visions of today’s engaged photography.

  • Julia Szabłowska is a Belarusian journalist, a volunteer and a photographer. She organises photography workshops for children and teenagers from Ukraine and Belarus who were forced to emigrate.
  • Io Siversten is a Norwegian artist. In her work she focuses on, among others, the climate crisis and young people involved in the activist movement fighting for the climate.
  • Sergio Valenzuela Escobedo is a curator, an artist and a researcher from Chile. He is responsible for three exhibitions presented this year in Lodz. They pertain to the lives of indigenous communities in South America and describe their struggle for identity, independence and space for life.

Moderator: Tomasz Ferenc (Department of Sociology of Art, University of Lodz).

Admission is free!
