The number of students at the University of Lodz in study programmes and specialisations with English as the language of instruction has increased by 48 per cent since 2019. There was a dynamic increase between 2020 and 2022. There are currently 1148 students at the University of Lodz who are studying in English. More than 70% of them come from abroad.

The largest group of students in the community of 813 international students in English-language study programmes come from:

  1. Azerbaijan – 194 students
  2. Ukraine – 144 
  3. Uzbekistan – 140
  4. Türkiye – 55
  5. Kazakhstan – 22

Less numerous groups come from Ethiopia, India, Bangladesh and Morocco. Other countries are represented by individual representatives.

What attracts international students to the University of Lodz?

University of Lodz successfully recruits international students, creating a multicultural study environment and an open academic community. In order to find out the reasons why candidates choose our study offer, an anonymous survey monitoring the satisfaction of international students of the University of Lodz was conducted in December 2022 by the staff of the university International Relations Office. Three meetings with selected groups of students for the so-called satisfaction surveys in focus groups were also organised. Among other things, the students were asked which aspects of studying at the University of Lodz they found most satisfying. 

The students most frequently mentioned general friendliness and safety, which indicates that they feel comfortable at the University of Lodz and generally in Lodz. In addition, they said they appreciated the way the classes were run and the education level at the University of Lodz. The students also spoke highly of the quality of service provided by the administrative departments at the University of Lodz, where they completed formalities during their first days of stay. We realise that the admission process and the form of communication with prospective students builds up an image of the future place to study. In student’s opinion – applying simultaneously to various Polish and foreign universities – admission process at the University of Lodz was very simple and friendly

When asked why they had chosen the university, the majority of respondents answered that the University's offer met their expectations. The respondents also claimed that most often they found out about our university by recommendation – from current students or alumni who pass on information about the University of Lodz to their colleagues in their country of origin.

Another factor driving the increase in the number of international students in English-language study programmes is, among others, Russian aggression against Ukraine. In autumn 2022, there were 838 Ukrainian citizens in all (not just 'English') study programmes at the University of Lodz, 149 more than the year before. This is a significant increase.

Internationalisation strategy at the University of Lodz

University of Lodz is one of the leaders among universities in Poland in terms of internationalisation. According to a report by the Central Statistical Office, it ranked third in terms of the number of international students in 2020 and 2021, being third only to Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw.

University of Lodz in its strategy for the sake of further internationalisation of education is committed to increasing the number of classes taught in English (and other foreign languages), including those taught by international lecturers. In addition, in order to strengthen competences enabling graduates of the university to find employment in line with their expectations, it plans to open more study programmes with English as the language of instruction. These processes are supported by obtaining further international accreditations.
