BioMedChem Doctoral School of University of Lodz and Lodz Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences

News

BioMedChem Doctoral School of the University of Lodz and Lodz Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences provides support and guidance to those seeking a PhD who prepare dissertations in the following disciplines:

  • Biological Sciences
  • Medical Sciences
  • Chemical Sciences

BioMedChem Doctoral School is an interdisciplinary school, which has a unique curriculum offer. Doctoral students of the school gain knowledge from one of the three above mentioned disciplines, which is simultaneously closely related to the two remaining ones. During admission procedure, each doctoral student chooses the leading discipline for their research and dissertation. Joint seminar classes constitute a platform to expand knowledge in these three fields, so far frequently considered separate ones. It is a valuable supplementation of the gained knowledge that leads to better and fuller understanding of processes and phenomena taking place at the interface between animate nature and its surroundings. The institutions that form the School (University of Lodz, Institute of Medical Biology of Polish Academy of Sciences, Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies Polish Academy of SciencesEuropean Regional Centre for Ecohydrology) allow its research equipment use and carrying out research under the guidance of world-renowned scientists.

The studies last 8 semesters and they are full-time studies (the classes are held during working days). They are free of charge.

A) ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT and INTEGRATION CENTRE

At the heart of the school’s organizational life is the Doctoral Schools Centre (CSD), located on the first floor of the University of Lodz’s 14th Student Dormitory – famously known as the Tower of Babel – in Matejki Street in Lodz.

The CSD is more than a physical space. It is a cutting-edge support facility for all doctoral schools at the University of Lodz, including the BioMedChem Doctoral School of the University of Lodz and PAS Institutes.

It is here that people with a passion for science meet. It is here that new research ideas, teams, and friendships are born. Thanks to the CSD, the four doctoral schools now share a true academic community hub – a place that inspires and facilitates the daily life of PhD students.

Spanning 1175 m², the space includes:

Teaching Area:

  • Four seminar rooms (15–20 people)
  • One large workshop room (25–30 people)
  • Individual workroom with computers
  • Comfortable relaxation zone (armchairs, beanbags, sofas)
  • Nursing room (with changing table)

Administrative Area:

  • Doctoral school secretaries’ offices
  • Directors’ offices
  • Two conference rooms (15 and 30–40 people)

B) CONDUCTING RESEARCH

Doctoral candidates carry out their research projects in five specialized institutions:

At the University of Lodz:

  • Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection [link]
  • Faculty of Chemistry [link]

At PAS Institutes in Lodz:

  • Institute of Medical Biology PAS [link]
  • Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies PAS [link]
  • European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology PAS (under the auspices of UNESCO) [link]

Each of these institutions provides access to advanced laboratory infrastructure and unique research resources in biology, chemistry, medicine, biotechnology, and environmental sciences.

What do you gain as a doctoral student?

  • Access to modern laboratories at the University of Lodz and PAS Institutes
  • Administrative support in one dedicated location
  • Space for individual and collaborative work
  • Conditions conducive to focus and recovery
  • A place to integrate with fellow PhD students
  • Professional equipment (interactive whiteboards, multimedia, high-speed internet)

The BioMedChem Doctoral School of the University of Lodz and PAS Institutes in Lodz is not just a place of education – it is a carefully designed ecosystem that supports scientific, professional, and personal development.
