I am an enthusiastic scholar of Polish literature and cultural history. My current research project delves into the fascinating realm of esoteric practices in communist Poland. Previously, I have explored, for instance, the transfer of knowledge and literature from German academic centres to Vilnius University in the early nineteenth century, and Polish female authors who sympathised with the political right during the interbellum. Outside of research, I enjoy Latin dancing, photography, travelling, and appreciating little things.

I am an Ukrainian poet and essayist. Originally from the North of Ukraine (Sumy Region), after graduating from the Kyiv Shevchenko National University I have been living and working in Kyiv, which, as Place and People, City and Citizens, became the central personae and theme of my lyrics. I write mostly rhythmical and rhymed poetry that becomes rather dry in translations. Nonetheless it is still anthologized in many languages, and was even published as a separate book in Polish and two books in English, which even recently were on the short-lists of Griffin Poetry Prize and Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry.

I am a researcher and novelist based in Paris since 1990. I hold a PhD in Philosophy and a postgraduate degree (DEA) in Art History from the École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE) in Paris.
Born and raised in totalitarian Albania, my research examines how fiction confronts the boundaries of what can be said and thought under censorship, and how it can become a counter-archive for what official narratives consign to silence or oblivion.
My novel Chloroform explores intimacy as a force of subversion and asks how free individuals can survive under totalitarian systems.

I have been researching the topic of censorship since the early 2000s, and my history of Australian book banning, called The Censor's Library, was published in 2012, with a bibliographic dataset of every book banned through the twentieth century.  Australia proved to be one of the worst censors in the English-speaking world, which prompted my interest in international comparative accounts of publication censorship. My book with Dr Christina Spittel on Australian books published in the German Democratic Republic (Anthem 2017) directed a focus on Cold War censorship as such, and has led to ongoing work comparing the regimes of the GDR, postwar Japan, nationalist Indonesia, and Apartheid South Africa, among others, in search of a transnational method. My most recent book is a biography of the Australian feminist communist writer Dorothy Hewett, and my current project examines the communist-supported Cold War publishing company the Australasian Book Society. I'm a Professor at the University of New South Wales and live in Canberra, Australia's 'bush capital', where on weekends I love to walk in the natural parks that surround my suburb. In the southern-hemisphere spring, the wildflowers are out!

I used to be a poet and a prose writer in Soviet times, engaged actively in Ukrainian cultural underground. This was rewarded with expulsion from the university and effective ban on any other enrolment. After the Soviet fall, I got my diploma and published my clandestine works but did not get much satisfaction. For still unclear reasons, I stopped writing or, rather, changed radically my style and genres. I defended a Ph.D. in Political Science, penned several scholarly books and got my current position of the principal researcher in the Academy of Sciences. The phantom pain, however, persists and I still pay a tribute to abandoned belles lettres as a critic and essayist.
