Mgr Dariusz Gwis, starszy wykładowca SJO UŁ, ekspertem SERMO

Mgr Dariusz Gwis, senior lecturer at the Foreign Language Centre of the University of Lodz, has been appointed a member of the expert team of Accreditation Commission of SERMO, i.e., the Association of Academic Foreign Languages Centres. The lecturer from the University of Lodz will help implement the main mission of the Association, which is to consistently raise the level of foreign language teaching at Polish universities.

SERMO, formed in 2006, is a nationwide association bringing together managers of the academic centres involved in foreign languages teaching. Environmental accreditation is a new product that helps them raise the level of education.

Obtaining the SERMO environmental accreditation confirms that an institution meets the established requirements and quality criteria for foreign language teaching. The accreditation is granted by the SERMO Accreditation Commission which bases its assessment on the opinion prepared by a team of experts. The experts are appointed by the SERMO Accreditation Commission from among the candidates proposed by the centres associated in SERMO. The condition for being appointed an expert, apart from the evaluation of the so-far achievements, is completing a specialized training – explains mgr Dariusz Gwis, who has just successfully completed such a training

The tasks of the experts being members of SERMO Accreditation Commission include evaluating the activities of a given centre in terms of its compliance with the required criteria significantly affecting the quality of foreign language teaching in higher education institutions, among others, the conditions in which it takes place, the programmes and methods of teaching and learning, the way in which the quality of teaching is assessed and the actions taken to improve it.

Mgr Dariusz Gwis has been affiliated with the University of Lodz since 1982, first as a student and then, since 1987, as a teacher, lecturer and, finally, as a senior lecturer in Latin at the Foreign Language Centre. He is the head of the Modern Languages and Latin Teaching Team. He has been repeatedly elected to the Electoral Board of the University of Lodz. In 2020 he was distinguished by his colleagues who elected him to the Senate of the University of Lodz for the 2020-24 term. The greatest passion of mgr Gwis is passing his love for the Latin language and ancient culture to his students. For many years, he has been collaborating with the Department of History of Philosophy and the Centre for the Philosophy of Nature led by prof. dr hab. Elżbieta Jung, where he has been participating in research projects led by the professor.
