This is the highest title that can be awarded by a university. Senate of the University of Lodz conferred it on Prof. Bodnar by a resolution adopted a year ago (20 March 2023) for his actions taken for the benefit of society while acting as Civil Rights Ombudsman.
Prof. Adam Bodnar, who is a lawyer with broad academic achievements, has played a key role in promoting and protecting human rights and democratic values in Poland. His commitment to the fight against discrimination, the defence of civil liberties and the building of institutions of social justice has won him both national and international recognition. He showed particular merit for the defence of human rights when he was the Civil Rights Ombudsman from 2015 to 2021. He has held the office of Minister of Justice since December 2023.
Thus, the University of Lodz continues the tradition of honouring outstanding people, who have made a significant contribution to various fields of science, culture, politics and society. Winners of this honourable distinction include such personalities as: Prof. Joseph Weiler (2022), Herman Van Rompuy (2021), Prof. Jan Woleński (2020).
In the second part of the formal sitting of the Senate, employees of the University of Lodz will be presented with the university medals awarded to persons or institutions for special contribution to the university: "Universitatis Lodziensis Amico (Friend of the University of Lodz)" and "Universitas Lodziensis Merentibus".
