Antonio María López González, PhD, Habilitated Doctor, Associate Professor at the University of Łódź

Linguist, specialist in Hispanic studies, and Associate Professor at the University of Łódź. Since 1 October 2026, he has served as Director of the Institute of Hispanic Studies at the Faculty of Philology, University of Łódź.

He graduated in Hispanic Philology from the University of Almería (Spain), where he obtained his PhD in 2001 with a dissertation on the sociolinguistic analysis of radio language. In 2016, he was awarded the Polish postdoctoral degree of doktor habilitowany (habilitation) in Linguistics at the University of Łódź.

He has gained academic experience at universities in Spain, Germany, and Poland, including the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He has been affiliated with the University of Łódź since 2007. From 2023 to 2024, he headed the Department of Spanish Linguistics and General Linguistics, and from 2024 to 2026, he served as Head of the Department of Spanish Philology.

His research interests focus on sociolinguistics, geographical, social, and stylistic variation in Spanish, lexical availability in first and foreign languages, media language and public discourse, and the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language (ELE). In recent years, his research has also addressed linguistic diversity in Latin America, the sociolinguistic situation of Indigenous languages, and the representation of Spanish varieties in language technologies.

He is the author of over 50 scholarly publications, including monographs, peer-reviewed journal articles, and chapters in edited volumes. Among his major works is the monograph Disponibilidad léxica. Teoría, método y análisis (2014). His research has been published by national and international academic publishers, including Springer and the University of Łódź Press. He has also co-edited numerous scholarly volumes devoted to Hispanic linguistics.

He participates in international research initiatives, including projects on lexical availability in the Spanish-speaking world associated with the University of Salamanca, as well as research on the international dissemination of Spanish through the media coordinated by El Colegio de México. He regularly presents his research at academic conferences in Poland and abroad and has supervised doctoral dissertations, master's theses, and bachelor's theses.

He is actively involved in promoting Spanish language education in Poland, teacher training, and the dissemination of the languages and cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. Since 2022, he has directed the National Spanish Language Olympiad in Poland, and since 2004, he has served as a DELE examiner for the Instituto Cervantes. In recognition of his academic and teaching achievements, he has received several distinctions, including the First-Class Rector's Award from the University of Łódź (2019) and the Spanish Language Teacher of the Year Award in Poland (2011).
