Rok akademicki 2021/22 na UŁ rozpoczęty!

University of Lodz has inaugurated the academic year 2021/22. The ceremony was organized in the Assembly Hall A1 of the Faculty of Philology, you could also follow it online. About 10 000 students is starting their studies at the largest university in Lodz and another 16 000 will continue their studies. Thanks to the IDUB competition, over 40 scientists from all over the world have joined the over 30-thousand-strong UL community. This is the largest "transfer" in the history of the University. We welcome new students and new researchers, we welcome everyone after many months of studying and working online, we hope that the traditional (on-site) mode will stay with us permanently!

In her speech, the UL Rector Elżbieta Żądzińska was talking, among others, about the new UL strategy for the years 2021-2030. Its main assumption is to achieve the status of a research university with a strong scientific position in the country and Europe. The UL Rector encouraged the students to undertake research effort from the first years of their studies. This is one of the recipes for success. The other one is to constantly follow the five values of the University of Lodz, which are inscribed in the above mentioned Strategy. They are: courage, curiosity, commitment, cooperation and respect.

Be open to the world. Look for chances and opportunities for yourself. Join research teams. Take advantage of grant programmes addressed to doctoral students and students. Seek mentors and learn from their knowledge. You are the future of our University – said prof. Elżbieta Żądzińska.

Representatives of the University of Lodz Students and Doctoral Students’ Governments also took the floor.

We spent the last year and a half studying remotely - online, far away from our friends. I hope that this year will be normal again, that we'll be able to spend our time at the University as we used to and that, after a 3-year break Juwenalia will come back, which the whole Lodz will hear about – said Bartłomiej Józefowicz from the University Students’ Government Council.

Let the words of the first Rector of the University of Lodz, Prof. Tadeusz Kotarbinski accompany you: "One should question everything one can question, for this is the only way one can discover the unquestionable.” – said to the new doctoral students the chairwoman of the University Doctoral Students' Government Council, Katarzyna Kurpet.

This year’s special guest was professor Andrzej Jajszczyk from the AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, a physicist, outstanding researcher, Vice-President of the European Research Council. In his lecture entitled ”We boldly reach for the important. The way to success in science" he was presenting opportunities that the ERC grant offers.

The work of a researcher must be hard and systematic. It is true that sometimes great discoveries are made by chance, while conducting research which is not related to the subject of the later great discovery, but invariably – noticing this coincidence is possible only for those who present such a level. The ERC grant means, first of all, that we have already achieved some scientific successes at our career level, but it also gives us a great chance to achieve even greater scientific successes – said professor Andrzej Jajszczyk.
