NATO w krainie Muminków – rozmowa z dr. hab. Wojciechem Woźniakiem

Dr hab. Wojciech Woźniak, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz talks to DR Tomasz Lachowski and Dr Mateusz Piatkowski about Finland's year in the North Atlantic Alliance.

Finland became the thirty-first member of the North Atlantic Alliance on 4 April 2023. The direct cause of the decision by the authorities in Helsinki to join NATO was Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine, but the process of achieving it in historical terms is no longer that obvious. Is the balance of expected profits and possible losses still positive for Finland on its first anniversary of membership in the Alliance, and at the same time on the 75th anniversary of the establishment of NATO?

In the latest episode of the podcast, the scientists wonder how the modern identity of Finns has been shaped and how it has influenced the decisions of the Finnish authorities in the international arena. They consider the period of the Finnish national awakening in the 19th century, but under the rule of the Tsar of Russia, through the Winter War with the Soviet Union, the "Finlandisation" of the Cold War period under the watchful eye of the Kremlin, up to the clear indication of the Russian Federation as the source of the threat to Finland at present.

  • How does the Finnish political scene react to changes in the security architecture?
  • Is Finland ready for hybrid Russian actions in cyberspace, but also for the creation of migration pressure on the Finnish-Russian border?
  • Finally, what is the social awareness of contemporary Finns in the area in question?

These and other questions will be answered by the special guest of the podcast "Lachowski i Piątkowski o prawie międzynarodowym" [Lachowski and Piątkowski on international law], Prof. Wojciech Woźniak from the Department of the Sociology of Structures and Social Changes at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Lodz, member of the Westermarck Society; author of the book: "Państwo, które działa. O fińskich politykach publicznych" [A state that works. About Finnish public policies] (Lodz University Press: Lodz 2022).
